Note: Important Corrections are given to a much published error.

This register report corrects a serious error in Ida Crozier's published research which gives the wrong birth date and wrong parents for her Loyalist ancestor Johan Frederick VÖLKEL / FELKER, UEL. He was actually born in Germany, 5 August 1751 (not 1757) and did die at Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth County, Upper Canada, 30 November 1838.

Frederick's father was Johan Eckhart Volkel. His father died when he was young and his mother married second, his Uncle Joseph (Jost) who died at Gainsborough Twp. living a will in 1805. His Uncle Jacob died  at Gainsborough Twp. leaving a will in 1802. Frederick was a first cousin to Joseph (Jost) and Lewis (Ludwig) FELKER of Gainsborough Twp., sons of his Uncle Jacob.

Those who are researching the ancestors and descendants of the Johan Frederick VOELKEL who was born in 17 November 1757 can contact Johanna Johnson for more information on his descendants.

The Johann Friedrich Voelkel born November 17, 1757 in Erndtebruck, died May 16, 1808 in Berleburg, Germany at age 50 and did not immigrate to Canada.  He was the son of Johann Jost Voelkel and Anna Margarethe Birkelbach and he married Maria Elisabeth Schnell who was born October 15, 1757 in Erndtebruck and died March 6, 1841 there also.  They had 11 children. This is not the Johann Friedrich who married  Mary Mingle.

First Generation

1.     Johannes VÖLKEL was born 1705 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died 31 May 1768 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

Supplied by Joachim Volckel, Germany, 30 March 2003

Johannes is given as a "Muellersmann."

Johannes married (1) Catherina Elisabeth MUELLER, daughter of Henrich MUELLER and Anna Elizabeth BELZ, on 27 Feb 1727 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. Catherina was born 11 Feb 1702 in Schamderer, German. She died 28 Jan 1742 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Prussia.

The IGI extraction for this marriage gives Johannes Voelckel to Elisabeth Moeller, 27 Feb. 1727, FHL film #591440; Evangelisch-Reformierte Church, Erndtebrueck, Westfalen, Preussen.

Johannes and Catherina had the following children:

+              2    M         i.    Johan Eckhard VÖLKEL was born 26 Jan 1728 and died 11 Jul 1758.

+              3    M        ii.    Johann Friedrich VÖLKEL was born 31 Aug 1731 and died 22 Dec 1774.

+              4    M       iii.    Johannes Jost VÖLKEL / Joseph FELKER was born Oct 1736 and died at Upper Canada before 18 Oct 1805.

+              5    M       iv.    Johann Jacob VÖLKEL / Jacob FELKER was born 6 Dec 1739 and died at Upper Canada before 20 Nov 1802.

Johannes also married (2) Christine LAUER, daughter of Henrich LAUER, on 11 May 1742. Christine was born 1695. She died 17 Mar 1760 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

Second Generation

2.     Johan Eckhard VÖLKEL (Johannes) was born 26 Jan 1728 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died 11 Jul 1758 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

Johan married Maria Katherina AMOS, daughter of Thomas AMOS and Margarethe LAUER, on 22 Sep 1747 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. Maria was born 27 Jun 1724 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

After her husband Eckhard died she married her brother-in-law, Johann Jost V (Joseph)

When and where did Maria Katharina die? Germany, New Jersey or Upper Canada?

They had the following children:

6    F           i.    Katharina Elisabeth VÖLKEL was born 6 Feb 1749 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

+              7    M        ii.    Johann Frederick  VÖLKEL  / John Frederick FELKER, U. E. L. was born 5 Aug 1751 and died 30 Nov 1838.

Johann married Anna Sophie WAHL, daughter of Johan Georg WAHL, on 15 Jan 1758 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Prussia. Anna was born 8 Apr 1728 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

This family remained in Germany.

They had the following children:

11    F           i.    Christine Margarethe VÖLKEL was born 2 Apr 1758 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

12    F          ii.    Maria Elisabeth VÖLKEL was born 22 Sep 1761 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

4.     Johannes Jost VÖLKEL / Joseph FELKER (Johannes) was born Oct 1736 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 9 Oct 1736 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died before 18 Oct 1805 in Gainsborough Twp., Lincoln, Upper Canada.

Need to obtain a translation of his birth record in parish records to determine names of Sponsors

Joseph's will names a son John, who may have had a daughter Mary, a daughter "Christeen" born probably in Germany, who had married a Mr. McGill by 1805. It is possible that this Christeen was daughter "Justine" given in the Erndtebrück parish registers. Also mentioned is the will are a granddaughter, Mary and her child Sarah. Executors are son John Felker and John Mingle (father or brother to Johan Frederick Felker who was a nephew of Johann Jost) and witnesses are Charles Rozzel, (Father-in-law to Johann Jost's two youngest daughters)  Daniel Roy (a future uncle to Elizabeth (Felker) Whitesell) to  and John Kennedy. The Roy and Roszel connections weave in and out in relationships with the Felkers and the Whitesells.

Upper Canada Land records and the will of Joseph indicate that he possessed property at Lot 31 South on the 5th Concession of Gainsborough Twp., Lincoln County, Upper Canada (now Ontario). [This is about 30 miles west of Niagara Falls. A portion of this lot was later indicated as belonging to John Frederick Felker. Further research required to verify that there are indeed two different John Felkers here; Joseph's son John Felker and Joseph's stepson John Frederick Felker unless the two are actually the same person?

The will of Joseph Felker (FHL film #0579157) was written 3 December 1804 and registered 18 October 1805.

In the name of god Amen, I Joseph Felker of the Township of Gainsboro County of Lincoln and province of Upper Canada being very weak of body and of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto god; calling unto mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all, I give and Recommend my Soul into the hand of Almighty god that give it and my body I Recommend to the earth, to be Buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors, nothing dsi? doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall Receive the same again by the mighty power of god, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith is has pleased god to Bless me in this life I give - demiss and dispose of the same in the Following manner and form.

A key question to be resolved here is whether the son John mentioned in the will is his son Johann Jost born in 1761, his step-son Johan Frederick born 1751 living nearby at the time and who died in 1838 in nearby Saltfleet Township, or another child "Johann" not yet identified.

Johannes married Maria Katherina AMOS, daughter of Thomas AMOS and Margarethe LAUER, on 17 Sep 1760 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

+            14    M         i.    Johann Jost VÖLKEL was born 28 May 1761 and may be the "son" John who died after 1804.

15    F          ii.    Justine Elisabeth VOELKEL was born 29 Sep 1763 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. She died after 1804.

Is this "Justine" actually the Christine Felker mentioned in Joseph's will in 1804 as being his daughter "Christeen McGill."

NOT proven that this is the daughter that married a McGILL and was living at the time of Joseph's will.

Justine married MCGILL.

There are 9 McGills  and ? MAGILL in the 1828 Militia Rolls. There are not any McGill names in Lincoln or Wentworth Militia rolls. There is a George in York and William and Hugh in N. York,a Hugh, Robert and William in Wellington. It is possible that this daughter still resided in New Jersey.

16    F         iii.    Christine VÖLKEL was born 21 Nov 1765 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. She died 17 Apr 1769 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

17    F         iv.    Maria Magdelena VÖLKEL was born 5 Jan 1770 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. She died 12 Jan 1771 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

5.     Johann Jacob VÖLKEL / Jacob FELKER  (Johannes) was born 6 Dec 1739 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 12 Dec 1739 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died before 20 Nov 1802 in Gainsborough Twp., Lincoln, Upper Canada.

Jacob's will written at Gainsborough Twp., Lincoln, Upper Canada (FHL film # 579157) dated 8 May 1799 and registered 20 Nov. 1802 names wife, Mary and children, Joseph, eldest, Lewis, Mary, Catherine and Christeen. His wife, son Lewis and a John Felker are Executors. Witnesses are Hocks Roy, Catherine Wardle and John Kennedy. Since Jacob's son John died in 1796 this John Felker is likely be nephew or possibly step-son John Frederick Felker. Further research required to determine who Catherine Wardle and John Kennedy were. The will is signed in German, Jacob Volckel and English, Jacob Felker.

According to his Upper Canada Land Petition Johann Jacob Völckel left Prussia about 1787 and emigrated to New Jersey where he resided until about 1796 when he petitioned for land in Upper Canada.

Upper Canada Land Petitions:

Jacob Felker, Niagara, 1796, F2 / 42 - Wife 3 daughters and 3 sons of age who are applying for their own land. He is of Germany and came to America 9 years ago and has been residing in New Jersey.

John Felker, Jr., 1796, F2 / 34 - son of Jacob, age 27 [b. ca. 1769] from New Jersey. He came to Upper Canada from New Jersey with father's family and elder brothers. This is apparently the John FELKER Jr. who was accidently killed in 1796. Age may be a transcribing error. Age might be 21 or 24.

Joseph Felker, 1796, F2 / 34 - son of Jacob from New Jersey.

Ladwick (sic-Ludwick), 1796 - son of Jacob, age 21 , from New Jersey.

The Will of Jacob Felker, dated 8 May 1799, is given in Lincoln County, Ontario, Surrogate Court Records (FHL film #0579157).

In the name of God Amen, I Jacob Felker of Gainsborough Township, Lincoln County and Province of Upper Canada Yeoman being in (Perfect Health of) Body, and of Perfect Mind and Memory, thanks be given unto God, calling unto Mind the Mortality of my body, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, in Manner Following and First of all I give and Recommend my Soul into the hand of Almighty god that gave it, and my Body I recommend to the Earth, to be Buried in decent Christian Burial, at the Descretion of my Executors. And After my wife's Death the Estate is to be Equally Divided Among my four Children or my son Lewis and Mary Catherine Christeen [no commas are given, but this must be three daughters, Mary, Catherine and Christine? Or is it Mary Catherine and Christine? That including eldest son Joseph would make four children.]

I Likewise Constitute, make and Ordain my Dearely Beloved Wife my son Lewis and John Felker my Sole Executors of this my Last will and Testament, and I do hereby Utterly Disallow Revoke and Disannul all and Every other Former Testaments and Legacies, bequests and Executors, be me in anywise before Named Willed. On 27 September John Kennedy appeared before the Surrogate Court and testified that he was present when Jacob Felker signed his last will and testament.

Further research needed to determine who the John Felker is who is referred to as an executor. Is he the Johann Frederick Felker, U.E.L., or is he the John mentioned as son of the Joseph who died in 1804/1805; Were the daughters born in New Jersey? It appears that there are no birth records for them in Erndtebrueck parish records.

I have reference to an immigration record of a Ship, Sally, Oct. 1774, Johnann Jacob Welcker, Johann Jacob Welker (2).

Johann married Maria Elisabeth GRIESING, daughter of Jacob GRIESING and Maria Elisabeth, on 23 Apr 1765 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. Maria was born 10 Sep 1750 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 14 Sep 1750 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. She died after 1799 in Gainsborough Twp., Lincoln, Upper  Canada.

She is given as wife "Mary" in the will of her husband Jacob written in 1799 at Upper Canada.

They had the following children:

18    M         i.    John FELKER Jr. was born about 1768/1769 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died 1796 in Gainsborough Twp, Elgin, Upper Canada.

Who is this person? Need to find him in E. parish records. If age of 27 is correct he should have been born in 1768/1769 which is a possible fit.

Upper Canada Land Petitions give that;

John Felker, Jr., 1796, F2 / 34 - son of Jacob, age 27 [b. ca. 1769] from New Jersey. He came to Upper Canada from New Jersey with father's family and elder brothers.

This is apparently the John FELKER Jr. who was accidentally killed in 1796. Age may be a transcribing error. Age might be 21 or 24.

Heather Beed / Vic Research gives that:

"John Felker, brother of Joseph, was accidentally killed in 1796 at David Secord's mill." (a deposition signed by David Secord August 24, 1810 when Joseph Felker was trying to possess the land that John Jr. had received (South 1/2 of lots 34 and 35, Concession 5 Gainsborough Twp.).

Therefore we know that John Jr. had died before Jacob's will was written in 1799.

19    M        ii.    Johann Friedrich VÖLCKEL was born 18 Feb 1770 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 22 Feb 1770 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died 16 Apr 1774 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

+            20    M       iii.    Johan Jost VÖLCKEL / Joseph FELKER was born 23 Nov 1771 and died Gainsborough Twp., 24 Jun 1846.

21    M       iv.    Johannes VÖLKEL was born 19 Nov 1773 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 23 Nov 1773 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died 24 Apr 1862 in Gevelsberg, Westfalen, Germany.

22    M        v.    Johann Jacob VÖLKEL was born 8 Jul 1776 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 12 Jul 1776 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. He died 20 Nov 1776 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

+            23    M       vi.    Johan Ludwig VÖLCKEL / Lewis FELKER was born 29 Aug 1778 and died at Gainsborough Twp., 28 Jul 1857.

24    F        vii.    Anna Margareth VÖLKEL was born 18 Aug 1782 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany and was christened 21 Aug 1782 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany. She died 15 Jun 1784 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Germany.

Parish register. FHL film #591439, p. 245; death mark next to bp (check deaths).

[Need further confirmation that this is the "Mary" indicated in Jacob's will]

+            26    F         ix.    Catherine FELKER was born about 31 Dec 1790 and died 27 Jan 1859.

+            27    F          x.    Christina FELKER was born about 1792 and died 10 Oct 1812.

Third Generation

7.     Johann Frederick VÖLKEL  / John Frederick FELKER, U. E. L. (Johan Eckhard, Johannes) was born 5 Aug 1751 in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Prussia and was christened in Erndtebrück, Westfalen, Prussia. He died1 30 Nov 1838 in Saltfleet, Wentworth, Upper Canada and was buried in Felker Cemetery, Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth, Ontario.

Much of  the early research on Frederick Felker was done by Ida Crozier. She published two books on the Felkers but unfortunately got Frederick's birth date and parents wrong.

Ida Crozier gives in error that Frederick was aged 80 ys, h/o Mary (stone no longer present in 2002). Ida had wrong parents for Johan Frederick and I am not sure where this age of 80 years at death came from but new evidence from Joachim Voelkel in 2003 indicates that Frederick was age 87 when he died.

Ida gives: On 18 May 1773 Johann Friderick Voelkel boarded the Ship Hope from Rotterdam, via Cowes, Isle of Wight and at Wicacoa on 1st of October 1773 take and "subscribe the foregoing Oaths and Declaration in the usual Form." Ida Crozier [List of arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia From 1727-1808. Also on this list were Andreas Adam Lutz and Red. (+) Volckel. Bible presented to him at Erndtbruck May 18, 1773.

Ida Crozier gives "The crown Grant he received was dated July 8, 1799 for 200 acres, being composed of Lot 30 Concession V in the Township of Gainsborough, Lincoln Co., while the other Felkers had adjoining farms granted to them."

Joseph Felker willed this land to son John and daughter Christeen McGill in 1805?; So does this mean that son John was actually step-son John Frederick Felker?

[research George Bowman]

John and his family were in Saltfleet in 1820. An Indenture of Bargain and Sale, dated 23 Feb. 1820 by which James Henry of Clinton in Lincoln, granted unto John Felker of Gainsborough...

[ This then would seem to dispute Ida Crozier's research and would indicate that John Frederick is the "son" John in Joseph Felker's will.
