Here is the information on Nehemiah and his sons as found in Nathaniel
Mason Pawlett's book Albemarle County Road Orders 1783-1816. Pawlett
was Faculty Research Historian at the Univ. of Virginia, Charlottesville at the time of
publication in 1975. The book appears to be mimeographed typewritten pages.
I found it on microfilm # V163-103, item 5, borrowed Inter Library Loan from AGLL (Am. Genealogical Lending Library), and made photocopies of the
relevant pages.
To put this info in perspective, in his Introduction Pawlett states:
The establishment and maintenance of public roads was an important
function of the County Court during the colonial period in Virginia.
Each road was opened and maintained by an Overseer or Surveyor of the
Roads charged with this responsibility and appointed by the Gentlemen
Justices. He was usually assigned all the "labouring Male Titheables"
living on or near the road for this purpose. [titheable age 16 and over?
- According to Nettie Schriner-Yantis, in her introduction to the 1787
Tax Census of Virginia, "the age at which white males were tithable at
the county level was 16 years; at the state level, the age was 21
years." - kosh]
The earliest mention of Hundley was in June 1812, on Pawlett's page #201 (I
used the index in Pawlett's book to find these). The entry reads as follows:
page 201-
1 June 1812, Order Book 1811-1813, p. 199

Albemarle Estate info submitted by Scott Simpson and posted in Rootsweb
Will Archives -- The Estate of Samuel W. Anderson made settlement of
many accounts due, one of them being cash paid on March 6, 1820 to
"Nehemiah Hundley preceipt $2.00" -- per Albemarle County, VA Will
Book 7, p. 71, report of Executor recorded June 1, 1821. From Pawlett's
road entry above, it appears that Nehemiah and Samuel were neighbors. -

[**] George Drumheller is the brother of
Leonard who married Nehemiah's daughter Ann Hundley, per Patrick Wardell
in his book, Virginia and West Virginia Genealogical Data from
Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records.

Good repair.
[*] Note:--[Jarrott Sudderth is the bondsman at marriage of
Thomas Hundley
(Nehemiah's son) and Elizabeth Hensley 16 Oct 1812 in Albemarle. Jarrot
affirmed that Elizabeth upwards of 21 years. She is dau of Samuel
Hensley who gives consent. This info from Marr. Reg. 1806-1868,
fol.13, and B/C Papers, 1803-12, per Vogt & Kethley book
Albemarle County, Va. Marriages, 1780-1853 vol 1 p. 171; book at Roanoke
library.
I have never found another mention of a Lewis Hunley in this time and
county, so I am guessing that this is Nehemiah's son Thomas, aka Thomas L. because Thomas
L. and Eliza-[beth] Hundley are listed as parents of our ancestor Thomas
Hundley, deceased 1874, according to info provided by wife Amelia {Pittman}

These road orders give us an interesting insight into the birth order of
Nehemiah's sons. First son James is not listed, so he is presumably married
and moved elsewhere. Second son John is also not listed, as he was married
in 1811 in Fayette Co, VA. The first name besides Nehemiah is listed in
1813 and is Lewis, presumably Thomas L, the third son, who married in
Albemarle in 1812. In 1815 Thomas is listed, along with the next son,
Randolph, who married in Albemarle in 1815. The book only went to 1816, so
we can only wonder why Langsdon was not listed, since he should have been
about 18 by then, though probably not a married head of household yet.
At AGLL microfilm #163-103 which has Pawlett's book on it as Item 5, you will
find a very interesting Item 3. I did not take the time to read or photocopy
it, but it is also by Pawlett, and is called An Index to Roads Shown in
the Albemarle County Surveyors Books 1744-1853. It was published in 1976
and was 10 pages long. It should be very useful in trying to locate both the
roads mentioned, and the lands owned by Nehemiah, as listed in the Albemarle
land records.
Item 4 is Albemarle County Road Orders 1744-1748 by Pawlett. I checked the
Index and found no Hundley, but did find Hensley. The years 1749-1782 were
not included in any of the Items on this film.
