1. John HUNDLEY was born about 1789 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died 11 May 1860 in Fayette, West Virginia.

John married Mary THOMAS on 15 Jul 1811 in Fayette Co., West Virginia. Mary was born about 1800 in Virginia. She died 13 Sep 1879 in Mountain Cove, Fayette, West Virginia.

White, Virgil D., 1989; Index To War of 1812 Pension Files, Vol. II; G-M, p. 1050, gives the following for John Hundley; "Hundley, John, Mary (Thomas) WC-1380, m. 15 Jul 1811 Fayette Cty VA, d 11 May 1860, wd 13 Sep 1879 srv Capt Thomas Wood's Co VA Mil as a Pvt, lived Fayette Cty VA, wid lived Kanawha Cty W VA in 1871, died in Fayette Cty VA (Mountain Cove)

In the 1820 census at Greenbrier County, Virginia [now West Virginia] (p. 074), at the village of Lewisburg is John "Hundly". In the household are 3 males 0-10, and 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female 0-10, and 1 female 26 to 45. This fits with children, Valentine, and Austin. There would have been a daughter, Susan also. (Was there a another son born about 1812 or was John A. enumerated in the 1820 census?)

(NOTE there was a John HANDLEY family, not related in Greenbrier with a son Austin also)

In the 1830 census at Albemarle County, Virginia is a John Hundley with 1 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 40 - 50, 2 females under 5, 2 females 5-10 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50 (p. 256, next to his brother Randolph).

In the 1840 census at North Greenbrier County, Virginia [now West Virginia] is a John "Hunley", with 1 male between 10-15, 2 males between 20 and 30, 1 male between 40 and 50 [probably John himself], 1 female between 5 and 10 [a grandchild ?], 2 females between 10-15, 1 female between 15-20 and 1 female between 40-50 [ probably his wife] (p. 6.) There is a "Anstion Hunley, age 20-30, with a wife 20-30, with a boy and a girl under 5, at Greenbrier Co.

In the 1850 census for Fayette County, West Virginia, (p. 335, 14th dist.) is John Hunley Sr., 57, a farmer, With him is his wife Mary, age 50, and children, Elizabeth, 26, "Davis", 21, and Francis 16. They are living next to McClungs. There is also a Mary Hundley, 76 with Mary C. Hess at Mountain Cove, Fayette.

In the 1860 census at Fayette County West Virginia [then Virginia] (need page), is Mary Hundley, widow. John died in May before the census was taken.

In the 1870 census at Mountain Cove Township, Fayette County, p. 125/151, with the family of William and Mary C., Hess, 34, is Mary Hundley, 76, widow. (Note however that the pension file gives that she resided at Kanawha in 1871)

2. Valentine HUNDLEY (John) was born 1813 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died after 1855 and before 1880. (Did he die in Missouri?)

Valentine married (1) Mary MERRITT on 12 Nov 1835 in Augusta, Virginia. Mary was born about 1813/1820 in Virginia. She died before 1855 in Greenbrier Co., Virginia.

In the 1840 census at Augusta County, Virginia (p. 34) is Valentine Hunley. He is given as age 20 and under 30. (This supports birth date of about 1813) His wife is given as age 20 and under 30. There is a girl in the family under 5 (Susan) and a female age 15 and under 20 (sister to Mary?)

In the 1850 census for Greenbrier, Virginia, p. 275, Valentine "Hundly" is 37, a cooper born in Va. married to Mary, 28. They have children, Susan, 10, John, 8, Catherine, 6, Christopher, 4, Silas, 3, and Amanda, 1. They also have with them a Rebecca Duncan, 4.

With them is Preston Bennett, 19 born West Virginia, Works on the railroad. (Is Preston Bennet Chris's cousin, James P. Bennet son of Susan Hundley and John Bennett?

In the 1880 census for Greenbrier, Summers, West Virginia, p. 164D, Christopher Hunley, 32, born Ireland, parents born Ireland, Blacksmith, married to Minnie, 24, born West Virginia. With them is son, Orean L., 3 born West Virginia. This Christopher is also found in Union Pension cards, certified Aug 5. 1876 for an invalid pension, his widow Minnie applying from Ohio in 1903 and getting certified for a pension. (KOSH) Is this the Chris Hunly who serfed in Co., K. 4th WV Vol. Infan and Co. C 2nd WV Vet Infantry?

In the 1880 census for Salem, Roanoke, Virginia, p. 569D, there is a Catharine Hundley, Widow, 59, born Virginia, Keeping House, parents born Virginia with daughter, Rene M., 22, born Virginia. Doesn't look like a good fit.

Did Catherine remarry after Valentine died?

3. Austin B. HUNDLEY (John) was born 1814 in Virginia. He died 2 Apr 1895 in Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia and was buried in Baptist Church Cemetery, Sewell Mountain, Fayette, West Virginia.

Austin married (1) Matilda TURNER on 12 Mar 1835 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Matilda was born about 1817 in Virginia. She died before 1868 in Kanawha, West Virginia.

In the 1840 census at North Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virginia) is Austin Hunley, with one male under, 5, 1 male between 20 and 30, 1 female under 5, and one female between 20 and 30 (p. 6).

In the 1850 census at Fayette County (now West Virgina) is "Oustin" Hunley, 32 with wife Matilda, 32, and children, Mary F., 12, James W., 8, John S., 6, N. S., 4, Marshall, 2, Alice, 1 ( p. 335). He is lilving next to his brothers Jesse H. and John A.

Hundley, 10. They are near the Gwinns, Hesses and Taylors. They are living next to his brother John A. Hundley.

In the 1880 census in Kanawha Co, Charleston #2 District, pg 4, is Austia (sic) Hundley 54, a carpenter, with wife Mary E. 45, and 4 children: Alice 10, Missouria 9, Louisianna 5, Virginia 2.

In the 1890 Veterans Census for Kanawha County, Charleston District, Ward 2, is Mary E. Hundly (sic), house # 105/122?, widow of William H. Wells. Wells was a private in Co E in 13th VA, with service from Aug 22, 1862 - Jul 24, 1863 (11 mon 2 days). He died of measles Jul 24, 1863.

In the 1870 census at Cabin Creek, Kanawha, West Virginia, p. 35 is Isaac (sic - this is likely an error - should be Jesse) Arbaugh, 49, Works on RR, with wife, Martha, 44, and children, Laurie or Louisa, 16, Willa, 14, Malissa, 12, Sarah, 8, Hattie, 6, Maggie, 5, Sally B., 1 and John, 21. Next to them is George, 25, with wife Rhoda and young child Patria, 1 month.

In LDS film #0464936 called Fayette County, WV -- Vitals --Marriages 1830 - 1855 is a chronological typewritten list, page 15 of which shows August 21, 1850 - Schuyler Hendley [sic] and Jane Kincaid, Solemnized by Martin T. Bibb.

In the 1860 Census for Fayettle County, District #3, P.O. Mountain Cove, p. 407, is Skiles Hundley 30, Farmer, real estate valued at 25, [wife] Jane 25, Governess, Samuel 10, Jane 8, Susan 6, Rebecca 4, and Jesse (male) age 2/12, all born in Virginia. There is a problem with the indexing of this household, because the enumerator mistakenly marked the dwelling number and family number on Line 3 for Jane, instead of Line 2 for Skiles. The enumerator then added two small equal lines, presumably to show that Skiles and Jane were at the same address, but the person doing the indexing did not notice them, and listed Jane as head of household, and left Skiles out of the index entirely.
