Abstract of  Sarah (McCLUNG) HUNDLEY father's will.

The will of Joseph McClung, recorded in Will Book 2, pg. 427,428, dated Sept. 18, 1849 and probated December 1849, Greenbrier Co. Joseph McClung, Testator: Devises to Elizabeth, wife, Madison, Allen, Andrew, Samuel, Sons. Sarah Hundley, Cynthia Crawford, Margaret Tyree, Daughters. I bequeath to my son Madison the Groves tract of land containing100 acres. I give him the land willed to me by brother James, and the tract of land purchased from John Williams lying in the Clear and Hominey Creeks. To my son Allen, I give 200 acres or250 acres of land. I give to my son Andrew, 410 acres of land. The balance of my estate to be divided between my son Samuel, Cynthia Crawford, Margaret Tyree, the children of Rebecca Tyree, dec'd, and the children of Sarah Hundley.

In the 1840 census at North Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virginia) (p. 16) is Nehemiah S. "Hundly". The census shows 1 male in the family between the age of 5 and 10, one male between 15 and under 20, one male between 20 and under 40, 3 females under 5, and 2 females between 20 and 30. Two in the family were engaged in agriculture.

In the 1850 Census for Greenbrier Co., Virginia, 845 p. 295, Sarah "Hundly", 34 with children; Elizabeth, 14, Rebecca, 11, Nancy, 11, Jos', 6, Mary C., 4, Sarah F., 2, and Lorenz M. 12/12. They are living between the Mattichs and the Sims. Where is Nehemiah? Is he the N. S. Hunley at Picaway, OH? Rebecca may be double counted as age 13 with a McClung Uncle. The youngest 2 of Sarah's children, Sarah F. and Lorenzo are not named N. S. (Stape) will of 1869 probated in Boone Co., Indiana and may be children by another man.

Although "Staples" Hundley does not acknowledge Sarah as a daughter, there is a  marriage record for  a Winfield Kenny, to Sarah Hundley, (date, n/a) 1872; race, W; age 24, 22, s. n/a, born; Greenbrier Co. WV,  Greenbrier Co. WV. Parents: James & Margaret and parents for Sarah are given as Slape (Stape) & Sarah Hundley.

Sarah also had a son Lorenzo Hundley born about 1849 who is not named in Nehemiah's will. He married Martha V. Thomas in 1876 and had at least 6 children between 1877 and 1888.

In the 1860 Census for District 2, Greenbrier Co., Virginia p. 19, Sarah Hunly is 49, with children; Elizabeth is 24, Joseph is 16, Mary J. is 14, Sarah is 13 and Lorenzo is 11. Nothing that indicates that she is a widow or divorced. Next to her is her daughter Nancy J. Welsh, 21 and her husband. Meanwhile her husband has another family in Kentucky then moves to Indiana. It appears that she had no more children after Lorenzo in 1849 so husband may have left her by the 1850 census.

In the 1870 census for Blue Sulpher, Greenbrier, Lorenzo Hunley, 20 is with his cousin, Stuart McClung, 32 and his wife, Mary and their 5 children. Also with him is Louisa F. George, 15 (cousin?) Half-brother, Calvin Hunley, 46 is a couple of houses away.  Sarah D. HUNDLEY has not been found in the 1870 census and no death registration has been found for her.

Stape and Sarah had the following children:

3    F          ii.    Margaret Elizabeth HUNDLEY was born about 1836 in Virginia. She died after 1880 in Meadow Bluff, Greenbrier, West Virginia.

Her father names her in his will in 1869 as daughter "Margaret E."

In the 1870 census for Greenbrier - Have not been able to locate Elizabeth in 1870. She should be about age 34.

In the 1880 census for Meadow Bluff, Greenbrier, West Virginia, P. 338D, Elizabeth M. Hundley, 40 (sic) with brother, Lorenzo Hundley, 29, born Virginia, father born "Maysland" and mother born Virginia with wife, Martha V., 19 born Virginia and children, Luella J., 2, and Mary E., 7 Months both born West Virginia. Elizabeth also gives that father was born at "Maysland" and mother at Virginia.

No marriage or death registration has been found for her yet.

4    F         iii.    Rebecca A. HUNDLEY was born about 1838 in Virginia. She died after 1860 in West Virginia.

Rebecca married Harvey HANSON, son of William HANSON and Margaret, on 22 Oct 1857 in Greenbrier, West Virgina. Harvey was born about 1832 in Virginia.

Greenbrier Marriage register;22 Oct 1857; H. M. Hanson, 25, farmer and R. A. Hundly, 21; He son of Wm. and Margaret and she dau. of Nehemiah and Sarah by Jno. McElhenny.

In the 1860 census for District 2, Greenbrier, Virginia, p.399, Harvey Hanson, 28 farmer born Virginia is married to Rebecca N., 23.

In the 1870 census for Greenbrier - Have not been able to locate Rebecca in the 1870 census.

+              5    F         iv.    Nancy Jane HUNDLEY was born 1840 and died 1916.

+              6    M        v.    Joseph Madison HUNDLEY was born 17 Sep 1844 and died 11 Feb 1890.

+              7    F         vi.    Mary C. HUNDLEY was born about 1846 and died after 1920.

Stape also married4 (3) Martha Belle BRADSHAW, daughter of William BRADSHAW and Mary BERRY, on 11 Feb 1855 in Kentucky. Martha was born Mar 1818 in Kentucky. She died5 4 Mar 1907 in Marion, Boone, Indiana and was buried in Bethel Cemetery, Waugh, Indiana.

Stape's previous wife, Sarah was still living in Greenbrier in 1869. No divorce record has been found and family lore indicates that he left Sarah sometime about 1847. He does not name her two youngest children who were born after that time, Sarah and Lorenzo, in his will.

In the 1860 census for Augusta Key, Bracken, Kentucky, p. 1, is Nehemiah Hundley, age 54, born Virginia, farmer married to Martha, 38 with children, Nancy, 12, Henry, 10, Martha, 4, Sarah, 2 and Robert 1, all born Kentucky. Bracken is where Nehemiah's sister Martha Gillespie resided. Nehemiah had left is former wife Sarah McClung by 1850 when she was enumerated with her children in the Greenbrier census. Sarah is still residing at Greenbrier in the 1860 census. No divorce record has been found. Children Nancy and Henry were by Martha's previous marriage to Spencer Calvert. Spencer had died in 1850.

In the 1870 census at Marion, Boone, Indiana, p. 185, is  Martha Hunley, 50, Keeping house, born Kentucky with children, Martha E., 15, Robert E., 12, and twins, Valentine and Eliza F., 8, all born Kentucky. They are living next to a Benjamin McCoy, 33, "Criple" born Kentucky and his family. The published index gives Martha as a "Houley." Martha's husband had died a few months before the census was taken.

In the 1880 census at Marion, Boone, Indiana, p. 18C, Martha Hunley, 60, born Kentucky, parents born Kentucky, Keeping House, with son Robert, 21, born Kentucky, Farmer, and Valentine (index gives Votentine), 17, born Kentucky and twin sister, Frances, 17 born Kentucky. The children give father born Virginia.  She is living next to a Edward and Matilda Cook. Matilda is age 52, born Kentucky also and also has a daughter Nancy.

In the 1900 census for Marion Twp., Boone, Indiana, ED, 17, p. 9B, Martha B. Hunley, 82, born Kentucky in 1818 with son Valentine S., 37 born in Kentucky in 1862. They each give that each parent was born in Kentucky (this is in error for Valentine. His father is known to have been born in Virginia) Martha gives that 4 of her 8 children are living in 1900. This appears to be correct. 3 from marriage to Nehemiah and Henry C. Calvert from first marriage. They are both given as farmers.

Stape and Martha had the following children:

+              8    F        vii.    Martha Ellen HUNDLEY was born 8 Nov 1855 and died 1894.

9    F       viii.    Sarah W. HUNDLEY was born 11 Mar 1857 in Bracken, Kentucky. She died 27 Sep 1861 at Bracken, Kentucky.

+            11    M         x.    Valentine Staples HUNDLEY was born 10 Nov 1862 and died 24 Oct 1930.

At the outbreak of the Civil War Staples Hundley enlisted on the Confederate side as a regular soldier and saw service under General Stonewall Jackson and was killed by Union forces near his old home in a picket skirmish in 1861. The father of the named George (George Washington HUNDLEY a son) was
named after and for his father, Staples. He was born at Mt. Jackson, Virginia, in 1822. Before reaching his majority about 1840 he crossed the mountains and there following the meandering of the New River found lodgment in the county of Fayette. Here in 1852 he married Miss Rebecca Neal, an Irish lady of refinement whose people like her husband's had changed the spelling of the name upon coming to America (about 1810) from O'Neal to Neal.
