First Generation

1.     Thomas L. HUNDLEY was born about 1791 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died 25 Jul 1874 in Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia.

Thomas married Elizabeth B. HENSLEY, daughter of Samuel HENSLEY and Sibba, on 10 Oct 1812 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. Elizabeth was born about 1793 in Albemarle, Virginia. She died after 1875 in Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia.

White, Virgil D., 1989; Index To War of 1812 Pension Files, Vol. II; G-M, p. 1050, gives the following for Thomas Hundley; "Hundley, Thomas or Thomas Hunley, Elizabeth (Hensley) WC-6791, SC-4275, m about 16 Oct 1812 Albemarle Cty VA, sd 25 Jul 1874 Fayetteville W VA, srv Capt John Field's Co VA Mil as a Pvt lived Roanoke Cty VA 1850-5 & Fayette Cty VA 1871-4,  wid there 1875

 

Elizabeth died after 1883 when she is listed in the 1883 List of Pensioners at Fayette Co, Oak Hill - Elizabeth, widow, 1812 service.  Wardell's War of 1812- VA land and pension applications gives Thomas and Elizabeth Hensley's marriage as Oct 16, 1812 in Albemarle, and says that both received pensions.

   In the 1810 census for Albemarle, Virginia, Thomas is likely the other male enumerated with brother John "HERNLEY" with 9 slaves.

   In the 1830 census at Albemarle Co., VA; Thomas Hundley, p. 256. This census gives 2 Males under 5, 3 males between 5 and 10; 2 males between 10 and 15, 1 male between 40 and 50; and 1 female between 30 and 40. He had 5 slaves.

   In the 1850 census at Roanoke, Virginia, 57th Dist, page 280, Thomas Hunley, 58, wife, Elizabeth ,57, Lewellen 16, Elizabeth 19, Josiah 17, Albert 25, Thomas 20, Washington 20.  Thomas and Washington show up three days later, page 287, as carpenters living with three other carpenters in household of Augustus & Eliz JORDAN, also a carpenter, and probably their employer.  Living next door to Thomas & Eliz is Samuel 36 (probably his first son), Phebe 33, and three ch (1-5 yrs).  There are still three older sons unaccounted for.  [in 1850 Fayette County, 14th District, page 336 -- next door to John HUNLEY Sr and Mary, with Eliz, Davis and Frances, is a McCLUNG family

 

   In the 1860 census for Raleigh, Virginia, is Thomas Hundley, 60, farmer, and Mrs. [sic] 55, matron, Thomas 33 and Joseph (Josiah?) 23, both carpenters, and Elizabeth 25, spinster.

 

   In the 1870 census at Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia, p. 125.  Thomas Hundley (index gives "Henley", 84 (sic), Farmer, born Virginia, can not read or write, with wife, Elizabeth, 84, (sic). With them are Lucy Seymor, 16, "B" Domestic Servant, Bettie Kincaid, 39, born, Virginia, At Home, with her 2 children, Samuel E., 2 and Mary T., 4 months. [Is Bettie Kincaid Thomas's daughter, Elizabeth who next to Samuel Kincaid in the 1860 census? Age is right] Living next to them are their son "Fullen" (sic - this would be Llewelyn- he can not read or write] Henley and his family.

Second Generation

2.     Samuel Hendsley HUNDLEY (Thomas L.) was born about 1815 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died 12 Oct 1884 at Pulaski, Virginia. He is buried at the Snowville Christian Church Cemetery, Pulaski, Virginia.

Samuel married Phoebe about 1844 in Virginia. Phoebe was born 18 May 1816 in Virginia. She died 14 Oct 1878 at Pulaski, Virginia and is buried besides her husband.

    In the 1850 census for District 57, Roanoke, Virginia, p. 280, Samuel Handley, 36, born Virginia, laborer, married to Phoebe, 33. With them are children, James P., 5, Thomas, 2 and Sarah A., 1. They are residing next to Thomas Hundley, 58.

 

   In the 1860 census for Western District, Pulaski, Virginia, p. 778, Saml. Hundley, 46, Carpenter, with wife, Phoebe, 44 and children, James P., 15, John T., 13, Sarah C., 10, William R., 7, Elizth, 4 and Tina, 3. They are next to Sindrus C. Godby a Cabinet Maker.

 

   In the 1870 census for Wassee, Pulaski, Virginia Samuel H. Hundley (given as Handley in Ancestry.com) age 60, carpenter, born Virginia, with wife Pheba A., 56 keeping house and children, James P., 26, shoemaker, Julia A., 18, born Ohio (she is wife of James P.) John T., 22, carpenter, Cornelia S. A., 21, Robert S. (sic), 18, carpenter, Bettie M., 15, and Tina, 13.

 

   In the 1880 census for Pulaski, Virginia, Samuel widower and children J.T., Cornelia, Mary Tiney. Several pages later is Robert [James R.?], and wife M.J and two young children Cavia B and Mead.

 

Samuel and Phoebe had the following children:

              13    M        ii.    John Thomas HUNDLEY was born 23 Jan 1847 and died 25 April 1913. He is buried at the Snowville Christian Church Cemetery, Pulaski, Virginia. He married Virginia Catherine SILVERS. She was born 10 Jan 1860 in Virginia and died 17 May 1944 at Radford, VA.  They had at least 2 children, Karey E., b. 20 Sep 1888 (never married) and died 11 Sep 1959; Phoebe Ruth, b. 1 Oct 1896 who m. B. Burford BROWN and had children.

              14    F         iii.    Sarah Cornelia HUNDLEY was born 19 April 1849 and died 28 Sept 1919. She is buried at Snowville Christian Church Cemetery, Pulaski, Virginia.

              15    M       iv.    William R. HUNDLEY was born about 1851 and died 1947 in Virginia. He is buried at the Central Cemetery in Radford (Montgomery) VA

              16    F          v.    Elizabeth HUNDLEY was born about 1856 in Pulaski, Virginia.

              17    F         vi.    Tina HUNDLEY was born about 1857 in Pulaski, Virginia.

 

3.     Wellington B. HUNDLEY (Thomas L.) was born about 1818 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died 1859 in Botetourt, Virginia.

Wellington married Caroline M. MORRILL, daughter of James M. MORRILL and Eunice FINCH, about 1843 in Virginia. Caroline was born 6 Dec 1818 in Chittenden, Vermont. She died 1 Aug 1893 in Pierrepont, New York.

   In the 1850 census for District 8, Botetourt, Virginia, p. 83, Wellington B. Hunnely (sic), 31, born Virginia, farmer with wife Caroline M., 31, born New York and children, James T. or F. (census is very faint), 6, Zuinging? (a male), 5, Virginia A., 3 and Valentine T., 1.

 

   In the 1860 Census for Roanoke Co., VA, Dist 8, P.O. Salem, p. 789 is Caroline HUNLEY, 42, domestic, with son James 15, and son Zuinglius, 13. Close by, on page 778, is Wellington's brother Washington 32, farmer, and wife Daris 28, with Henry 6 and Adolphus 5.  At page 701 is found an unidentified widow Catherine HUNLEY, 39, with Elizabeth 16, Samuel 14, William 9, Sarah 5, and Parrans (sp?) 2.

   Also in the 1860 census at Salem, Roanoke, Virginia with the family of George Shanks, 40 and Lucy Shanks, 41 are children, James, 18, Thomas, 16, Mary ?, 11, Virginia, 11, Valentine, 12, George, 10, Mary, 8 and Theodore, 5. This is a perfect match for the remaining children of Wellington B. and Caroline Hunley. Who is Lucy? Is she a sister of Caroline? George appears to be fairly wealthy with real estate of $36,000 and personal estate of over %56,000.

 

   In the 1870 census for Pierrepont, St. Lawrence, New York, p. 30, Caroline Hundley (given as Handley in index), 51, gives born Virginia with Theodore Hundley, 14, born Virginia

 

   In the 1880 census for Pierrepont, St. Lawrence, New York, Caroline Hendley (sic), 61, gives born Vermont with father born New Hampshire and Mother born Vermont. She is a weaver.

 

Wellington and Caroline had the following children:

              18    M         i.    James T. HUNDLEY was born about 1844 in Virginia. He died 26 Dec 1864 in Camp Chase, Ohio and was buried in Camp Chase Cemetery.

6.     Albert S. HUNDLEY (Thomas L.) was born about 1825 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died after 1880 in Alleghany, Montgomery, Virginia.

Albert married (1) Jane MOSES on 14 Jul 1854 in Montgomery Co., Virginia.

   In the 1860 census for Virginia, Montgomery County, Lafayette twp, page 723, Albert is married to Jane, 32, with daughter Madora A., 6

Albert also married (2) Adeline CUNDIFF on 11 May 1861 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. Adeline was born about 1838 in Virginia. She died after 1880 in Alleghany, Montgomery, Virginia.

   In the 1870 Census for Virginia, Roanoke County, Salem twp, Salem P.O., page 364, is Albert S. Hundley, 46, Carpenter, [wife] Adaline 35, Sarah 16, Joseph 8, John A. 5, Francis 3, all born in Virginia.
 

   In the 1880 census for Alleghany, Montgomery, Virginia, p. 422C, Albert Hundley, 56, born Virginia, Laborer with wife, Adaline, 42, born Virginia and children, Joseph E., 18, John Albert, 13, Fanny A., 12, Alminer W., 9, Catherine, 7, William A., 4 and Charles J., 9 Months.

 

Albert and Adeline had the following children:

              27    M       iii.    Joseph Edward HUNDLEY was born Apr 1861 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. He died after 1880.

Thomas married Amelia PITTMAN "Emily", daughter of John PITTMAN and Nancy LILLY, on 19 Oct 1865 in Raleigh County, Virginia. Emily was born Sep 1837 in Virginia. She died 18 Jan 1916 in Kingston, Fayette, West Virginia.

   In Early Marriages of Raleigh County, by Pauline Haga, is Thomas Hundley, 37, born Albemarle Co., VA, son of Thomas and Elizabeth, married Amelia Pittman, 27, born Raleigh Co., VA, d/o John and Nancy, on October 29, 1865 by Alfred Beckley.

   In the 1870 census at Falls of Kanawha, Fayette, West Virginia, p. 97 is Thomas Hunly (index gives Hernly), 41, farmer born Virginia with wife, Amelia, 33, Housekeeper and children, Georgian, 8 (female), all born Virginia, and Josephine, 6, Valentine, 4, William, 2, Elizabeth, 1 all born West Virginia. With them is Pillance Elbert, (This is likely Albert / Elbert Pillauce /  Pittauce / or possibly even Pittman - very difficult to read) 12.

 

   In the 1880 census at Fayette County, Kanawha District, WV, p.40, is Granville Mitchell 58, carpenter, with Emily 43, and Margaret age 2/12, born April 1880.

 

   In the 1900 census at Fayette Co, Kanawha District, WV p.16A, is widow Emily Mitchell 62, and daughter Margaret E. age 20, living with Emily's son John T. Hundley 27, farm laborer, single.  Margaret is half sister to John.  Emily had 10 children, and 4 are deceased.  [Two children are unaccounted for.]

 

   In the 1910 census at Fayette Co., Kanawha District, Lick Fork Precinct, WV, p. 85,  is widow Emily Mitchel [sic] 77, living with daughter Rosa B 37 & husband John Smith 48, and their two sons Vesper 16 and Earnest 14.

 

Thomas and Emily had the following children:

              36    M       iii.    Tilman Valentine HUNDLEY was born 7 Mar 1867 in Fayette, West Virginia. He died 27 Dec 1899 in Fayette Co., Virginia.

              37    M       iv.    William Brown HUNDLEY was born 15 Aug 1868 in Fayette, West Virginia.

+            38    F          v.    Elizabeth Gwin HUNDLEY was born 26 Jan 1870.

+            39    F         vi.    Rosa B. HUNDLEY was born 6 Sep 1871 and died 28 Nov 1931.

8.     A. Washington HUNDLEY (Thomas L.) was born about 1829 in Salem, Roanoke, Virginia. He died after 1910.

Washington married Frances MCDAVIS "Fannie" about 1853. Fannie was born about 1830 in Virginia.

   In the 1850 Census info on Washington, where Washington  is living in Roanoke County, 57th District, counted once with his parents Thomas and Elizabeth, and a second time as a carpenter living with his brother and other carpenters.]

 

   In the 1860 census for Salem, Roanoke, Virginia, page 702, is Washington Hunley [sic] 32, farmer, with $600 real estate and $50 personal property, Daris (sp?) female 28, Henry 6, Adolphus 5, all born VA.

 

   In the 1870 Census for Virginia, Roanoke County, Salem twp, Salem P.O., page 390, is Washington Hundley, 42, Carpenter, $1500 real estate, and $1000 personal property, Francis 40, Henry 16 and Adolphus 15, both attending school, and 12-year old Eliza PHILIPS, at home, all born VA.

 

   In the 1880 census for for Salem, Roanoke, Virginia,  page 597C, is Washington Hundley, 50, wife Fannie [Francis] 48, Alexander [Adolphus??] 35 [born in 1845, when parents age 15?? -- not possible, because Washington is living at home in 1850 census], Hy. [Henry] Washington 26 and [Henry's wife] Lillie Hundley 18, daughter-in-law to head of household Washington.  [need to check original for spelling of "Alexander"; age should be 25 not 35.]    Per Mark Rain info above, Henry Washington married (1) Alice Lillian ["Lillie"] MURRAY February 12, 1880, before the 1880 census was taken.

 

   In the 1900 census for A. W. Hundley, 70, born Dec. 1829, widowed, with 3 grandchildren, A. R?. (male) 17 - at school, Fannie [his wife's namesake] 9 - at school, and A. M. (male) age 4, plus a housekeeper S. Robertson, age 30. All born VA, including their parents. A. W. owns his own farm. [don't know whose kids they are -- he had two sons, Adolphus/Alexander and Henry Washington. Submitted by KOSH]

 

    In the 1910 census for Salem, Roanoke, Virginia,  ED 136, sheet 7, Henry W. Hundley, 64, born Virginia, home carpenter, with wife, Mary, 32, born Virginia, her 2 children still living, Mirian, 3 and Thomas, 2. She appears to have been a second wife. Older children are with them; Fanny L., 20, Annon W., 14 and Henry's father Alminer, 80.

 

Washington and Fannie had the following children:

              41    M         i.    Adolphus A. HUNDLEY was born May 1855 in Salem, Roanoke, Virginia. He married Clara about 1894 at Ohio.

 In the 1900 census for Jefferson, Richland, Ohio, ED 116, p. 1A, Adolphus A. Hundly, 45, preacher, born May 1855 at Virginia, married to Clara, 34, born Nov 1865 at Ohio with son, David, 1, born April 1899.

 

              42    M        ii.    Henry Washington HUNDLEY "Hy" was born about 1855 in Salem, Roanoke, Virginia.

Hy married Alice Lillian MURRAY on 12 Feb 1880.

They had at least 3 children; Fanny L, Annon W. and A. M.

Henry married second about 1907 Mary. She was born about 1878.

In the 1910 census for Salem, Roanoke, Virginia,  ED 136, sheet 7, Henry W. Hundley, 64, born Virginia, home carpenter, with wife, Mary, 32, born Virginia, her 2 children still living, Mirian, 3 and Thomas, 2. She appears to have been a second wife. Older children are with them; Fanny L., 20, Annon W., 14 and Henry's father Alminer, 80.

They had at least 2 children, Mirian and Thomas.

 

9.     Elizabeth HUNDLEY (Thomas L.) was born about 1831. She died after 1870 in West Virginia.

Elizabeth married Samuel Taylor KINCAID 9 Oct 1866 at Raleigh, West Virginia. Samuel was born about 1841 in Virginia. He died after 1869 in West Virgina.

   In the 1860 census at Shady Springs, Raleigh Co. Virginia, p. 80, is Thomas Hundley, 60 (sic), farmer, and Mrs. [sic] 55, matron, Thomas 33 and Joseph (Josiah?) 23, both carpenters, and Elizabeth 25, spinster. They are next to the Kincaid family including Samuel Kincaid, 19. Is he future husband of Elizabeth?

 

   In the 1870 census for Fayette, West Virginia, p. 125, Bettie Kincaid, 39 is living with her parents Thomas and Elizabeth Hundley and children, Samuel E. Kincaid, 2 and Mary T. Kincaid, 4 months. Her husband is not with her.

              44    F          ii.    Mary T. KINCAID was born about 1870 in Fayette Co., Virginia.

 

11.   Lewellen Schuyler HUNDLEY "Lieu" (Thomas L.) was born 12 Apr 1835 in Salem, Virginia. He died 30 Apr 1891 in Oak Hill, Scarboro, West Virginia.

Lieu married Harriet Amanda HULL, daughter of Henry HULL and Elizabeth, on 26 Aug 1857 in Raleigh County, Virginia. Harriet was born about 1821. She died 1885 in West Virginia.

   In the 1860 Census for West Virginia, Greenbrier County, p. 360, L. S. Hundley, 23 [Lewis], His wife Amanda [Hull] is 24. They have son Henry T., age 1.

 

   In the 1870 census at Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia, p. 125.  "Fullen Henley" (sic - this would be Llewelyn- he can not read or write] Henley with wife, Amanda, 38, with children, Henry T., 11, farm laborer, Wm. L., 8, Emily V., 6 and Annie L., 4. He is living next to his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth.

 

   In the 1880 census at Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia, p. 19A, Lewis Honley, 44, farmer with wife Amanday, 46 and children, Henry T., 20, William E. W., 18, Emiley, 14, Anna Lou, 12 and Lewis's mother , Elizabeth, 84, born Virginia, parents born Virginia.

 

Lieu and Harriet had the following children:

12.   James P. HUNDLEY (Samuel, Thomas L.) was born about 1845 in Virginia. He died after 1900 in Ohio.

James married Julia A. about 1873 in Virginia. Julia was born about 1853 in Ohio. She died after 1900 at Ohio.

   In the 1880 census at Manchester, Adams, Ohio, p. 107C, James P. Hundley, 35, with wife, Julia A., 27, born Ohio and children, Grace A., 6, Oscar, 3 and Ethel C., 11 months. James P. Hundley, 35, born Virginia, Silver Smith with wife, Julia A.,


 In the 1900 census at Manchester, Adams, Ohio, ED 10, p. 9A, James P. Hundley, 55, born Virginia, Silversmith, married 31 years to Julia A., 43, born Ohio Sep 1856. Only 4 of her 9 children are still living. With them are Oscar, 23 born Ohio April 1877, apprentice marble cutter, Kate, 4 born Dec 1895 at Ohio and Raymond, 2, born Ohio March 1898.
 

James and Julia had 9 children children:

Oscar married T. Winie about 1901. She was born at Ohio about 1877.

 In the 1910 census for Manchester Twp., Adams, Ohio, p. 113A, Oscar Handley (as given in index but actual census looks like Hundley), 33, born Ohio married 9 years to T. Winie, 33. No children.

19.   Zwinglius Staples HUNDLEY "Zue" (Wellington B., Thomas L.) was born 24 Mar 1845 in Salem, Virginia. He died 28 Jan 1926 in Richmond, Virginia and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

Zue married Eleanor BUCHANAN "Ella" in 1882 in Souix City, Iowa. The marriage ended in divorce. Ella was born 1866 in Pennsylvania. She died 1930 in Anacortes, Washington.

   In the 1900 census for

 

   In the 1910 census at Dist. 35, Elma, Chehalis, Washington, Zuinglius S. Hundley, 65, married 25 years, family not with him. Born Virginia, father born Virginia, mother born Vermont. He is next to a James Bailey, 65, Widower, whose father is born Virginia and mother born New York

   In the 1860 census at Salem, Roanoke, Virginia with the family of George Shanks, 40 and Lucy Shanks, 41 are children, James, 18, Thomas, 16, Mary ?, 11, Virginia, 11, Valentine, 12, George, 10, Mary, 8 and Theodore, 5. This is a perfect match for the remaining children of Wellington B. and Caroline Hunley. Lucy is given in submissions as Lucy Lewis. George appears to be fairly wealthy with real estate of $36,000 and personal estate of over %56,000. George dies in 1876. None of the Hundley children are with him in the 1870 census.

John married Ida Belle ANDERSON, daughter of Samuel ANDERSON and Valaria Belle CURTIS, on 6 Dec 1900 in Powellton, Fayette, West Virginia. Ida was born 3 Jun 1883 in West Virginia. She died 1973.

Hendley), 56, born West Virginia, Coal mine, miner, to Ida B., 47 with children, Elrige V., 27, Coal Mine, Venie E., 17, Dora T., 15, Mable C., 12, Samuel M., 7 all born West Virginia.

45.   Henry Thomas HUNDLEY (Lewellen Schuyler, Thomas L.) was born 1 Sep 1860 in Fayette Co., West Virginia. He died 5 May 1934 at Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia and was buried in Woodmere Cemetery, Huntington, West Virginia.

Henry married Lucinda Jane HONAKER, daughter of William B. HONAKER and Malinda Jane SCARBROUGH, on 1 September 1881. Lucinda was born 3 Aug 1861 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia. She died 17 Feb 1953 at Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia.

  In the 1900 census for Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia, p. , Henry T. Hundley, 39, born July 1860 at West Virginia (father born Virginia and mother born West Virginia) has been married 17 years to wife, Jane L., 36, born Aug 1863. 8 of their 9 children are still living. With them are Joshia, 17 born Jun 1882, Henry C., 10 born June 1887, William O., 9 born Feb 1891, Lillie D., 7, born May 1893, Minnie M., 5, born May 1895, Rose J., 8/12, born Sep 1899 and French W., 2, born June 1897. (The race for Henry T. in the Ancestry. com index is given as "B" for Black. A close inspection of the letter reveals that it is actually a poorly written "W" that appears at first glance to be a "B.")

 In the 1930 census for Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia, ED 34, p. 27B, Henry T. Hundley, 70, born West Virginia about 1860, farmer married at age 22 to Jane, 68, born West Virginia. With them is daughter Anna, 22.

 In the 1910 census for Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia, p. 89A, Zingle Hundley, 26, born West Virginia, married 3 years to Lucinda K., 20. With them his her mother, Lucy J. Meadows, 66, widow. Zingle is a farmer and gives that both his parents were born in Virginia.

            110    M       iii.    Henry Clarence HUNDLEY was born 29 Jun 1888 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia. WW I draft card gives his birth as 25 June 1888 at Fayetteville, WV. He is a guard at the County Court of Fayette, singe with a "cripple foot."

            111    M       iv.    William Oscar HUNDLEY was born 12 Jan 1890 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia. WW I draft card gives that he is self employed in the Garage Business and is married.

William married Elsie BIAS, daughter of James B. BIAS, on 1 Apr 1917 in Charleston, West Virginia.

            112    F          v.    Lillie D. HUNDLEY was born 6 May 1892 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia.

            113    F         vi.    Minnie M. HUNDLEY was born Sep 1895 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia. She died Sep 1945.

            114    M      vii.    French Ward HUNDLEY was born 29 Aug 1897 in Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia. He is given in the WW I draft cards.

He married Emma Jane WILSON.

 In the 1920 census for Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia, p. 12B, ED 12, French Hundley, 22, born West Virginia, Coal Miner, with wife, Emma, 20 and children, Charles, 2 and French Jr., 1 3/12.

 In the 1930 census for Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia, ED 28, p. 11B, French W. Hundley, 32, born West Virginia, salesman for  Baker Co. He is married to Emma J., 30, born West Virginia married at age 17. With them are children, Charles, 13, French W., Jr., 11, Auralie, 5 and Jimmy, 1 9/12. Next to French is the family of John Calvin Baker the proprietor of a Grocery Store. (This may be the Baker Co. where French works as a salesman.)

            115    F       viii.    Rosa J. HUNDLEY was born 2 Dec 1899 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia.

            116    F         ix.    Mary Ada HUNDLEY was born 13 Aug 1902 in Fayette, Fayette, West Virginia.
