First Generation

1.     Valentine HUNDLEY was born about 1800 in Albemarle, Virginia. He died 1882 in St. Charles, Kane, Illinois.

Valentine married Margaret Catherine WILLOUGHBY "Peggy", daughter of Josuha WILLOUGHBY, on 15 May 1830 in Nelson, Virginia. Peggy was born about 1808 in Albemarle, Virginia. She died before 1850 in Virginia. (Need probate record for her father Josuha Willoughby)

Civil War military records give, Valentine Hundley - Worked as a Farmer. Had gray hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion and was 5.08 feet tall. Enlisted, 25 April 1862 at Nelson Court House, VA Private, age 62. Served Virginia Enlisted E Co. 51st Inf Reg. VA disch disability on 01 February 1863 (Typhoid fever & old age) Source: The Virginia Regimental Histories Serie. Fought at:

   In the 1830 census at Nelson County, Virginia, (No Township given), p. 106,  is Valentine Hundley -0001 - 0001 (Ancestry.com index gives "Handly).

 

   In the 1840 census at Unknown Twp., Nelson County, Virginia, p. 60, is Valentine Hundley, with 12 members in the family. He is between ages 40-50 (this would fit with a 1799/1800 birth, his wife or oldest female, 20-30, 1 boy under 5, 4 boys 5-10, 2 girls under 5, 2 girls, 5-10, 1 girl 10-15. The census is in Alphabetical order so neighbors can't be determined. This census would indicate 4 boys in the 5-10 age group not given below and 1 girl in the under 5 group not given below. Who are the other 7 children?  Peggy would have been 32 and census gives this wife in 20-30 range.

 

   In the 1850 census at Nelson County, Virginia (p. 232) is Valentine Hundley, age 50, a farmer with property valued at $1000. His wife is not with him. Children with him are, Elizabeth, 18, Lucinda, 16, (Stapels), 15, P (this is likely Parina) 13, John, 11, Joshua, 9, Mildred, 6, Martha, 3, and Fletcher, 2. Wife Peggy is not with them. Check for family with son William Bryant in area.

Valentine was living at Nelson Co. in 1855 when he applied for a pension for his father's service. He was age 53 at that time so he was born about 1802. See his testimony for pension application.

    In the 1860 census at Nelson County, Virginia, (p. 116 [old 804] Lovingston PO) is Valentine Hundley, 60, carpenter, real estate valued at $720, personal estate at $150, with children, all born at Nelson County, Lucinda, 26, Parina, 22, Joshua, 18, Mildred, 16, Martha, 14 and Fletcher, 12. They are living next to a Robert Johnson, and a Katherine Martin (Is this a cousin?)  also born at Albemarle County.

 

   In the 1870 census at Geneva, Kane Co., Illinois, p. 46, Valentine Hundley, 69, Carpenter, (married or Widower?) with children, Lucinda, 27 House Keeping, Parina, 25, "Madrot" (this is likely Mildred), 21, Martha, 21 ( She was actually Mrs. Martha Stewart since she had married in 1868) all born a Virginia and small child, Amelia (Amelia Stewart, daughter of Martha), 1 born at Illinois.

 

    In the 1880 census at St. Charles, Kane Co., Illinois, p. 455B, "Valander" Hundley, is father-in-law to head of house, Orlando Mullen, 50, husband of Valantine's daughter, Purena, 38, born Virginia and son, Berta Mullen, 8, and daughter Mabel, 5 months both born Illinois.

 

Valentine and Peggy had the following children:

                6    M        v.    John HUNDLEY was born about 1840 in Nelson Co., Virginia. He died after 1861 in Nelson Co., Virginia.

+              7    M       vi.    Joshua HUNDLEY was born about 1842 and died after 1880.

+              8    F        vii.    Mildred HUNDLEY was born about 1844 and died 20 Oct 1918.

+              9    F       viii.    Martha HUNDLEY was born about 1846 and died after 1880.

              10    M        ix.    Fletcher HUNDLEY was born about 1848 in Nelson Co., Virginia. He died after 1860.

Second Generation

4.     Nehemiah Staples HUNDLEY (Valentine) was born 1836 in Nelson Co., Virginia. He died 18 Dec 1862 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Nehemiah married Sarah J. HUNDLEY, daughter of Randolph HUNDLEY and Elizabeth REYNOLDS "Betsey", on 3 Nov 1855 in Kane Co., Illinois. Sarah was born 1836/1839 in Virginia. She died after 1872.

Sarah and  Staples were first cousins. See the Valentine Hundley register. His Civil War service record gives; Hundley, Nehemiah S. A 76 Illinois Infantry. Private Private Hundly, Nehemiah S. Union. Capt. Harrington's Co. A. Unit 76 Illinois US Infantry. His discharge papers give that he was 5 ft. 9 in. dark complexion, light eyes, dark hair, and a carpenter by trade. He was discharged  on 13 Dec 1862. Cause of death is given as ; chronic hepetitus and general debility. He entered US Army hospital, 28 Nov. 1862. Military service was from 24 July 1862, Middleport, Iroquois, Illinois. He mustered out on 22 Aug. 1862 at Kankakee, Illinois.

 His pension record gives: Nehemiah Hundley, Illinois 24 July 1862 Priv. Union Pension file: Nehemiah S. Hundley, Marion Agency, Iowa #152891. His widow was Sarah Hunley previously of Kane Co., Illinois. The record confirms that Sarah married John Schalk on 24 Dec 1864 at Kane County, Illinois. The children of Sarah and Nehemiah S. are given as Josephine, born, 20 June 1858, Ellen O., b. 16 Feb. 1860 and George W., born 3 March 1862. Elizabeth Hundley (probably Sarah's mother) named as midwife. There is a reference to Randolph Hundley who was brother to Maggie Sinkler and brother-in-law Nehemiah S. (This would be John Randolph Hundley). On 19 May 1869 the brothers of Sarah J., Luther and Randolph (John R.) give affidavit of knowing the couple. Sarah's sister Margaret C. Sinkler stated that she knew family for the past 18 years. [This possibly gives a clue as to when Nehemiah and his father Valentine moved into the Illinois area]

   In 1860 at Campton Twp., Kane Co., Illinois, N. S. Staples, 23, born Virginia (sic - this likely Nehemiah Staples Hundley) is a carpenter. With wife Sarah, and children Josephine b. ca. 1858, and Elinor b. at IL, 1859. Living with Randolph Huntly, Sarah's father.

 

Nehemiah and Sarah had the following children: (Note: Nehemiah and Sarah were first cousins. These children are also give in the Register for Randolph Hundley.)

              11    F           i.    Josephine HUNDLEY was born 20 Jun 1858 in Kane Co., Illinois. She died 4 Aug 1888 in Atwood, Kansas and was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Atwood KS.

+            12    F          ii.    Ellen V. HUNDLEY was born 16 Feb 1860 and died 2 Jan 1935.

+            13    M       iii.    George William HUNDLEY was born 3 Mar 1862 and died after 1888.

 

5.     Parina HUNDLEY (Valentine) was born about 1838 in Nelson Co., Virginia. She died after 1880 in Saint Charles, Kane, Illinois.

Parina married (1) her cousin, Thomas T. HUNDLEY son of Randolph Hundley and Elizabeth Reynolds on 29 Oct 1867 at Kane County, Illinois. He was born about 1830 at Albemarle, Virginia and died before 1875.
 

Parina married (2) Orlando J. MULLEN on 30 Jun 1875 in Kane, Illinois. Orlando was born about 1830 in New York. He died  after 1880 in St. Charles Twp., Kane, Illinois.

   In the 1880 census at Saint Charles, Kane, Illinois, p. 384A, Purena Mullen, 38, born Virginia is the wife of Orland Mullen, 50, Farmer born New York. With them are children, Berta, 8, Mabel, 5 months. With them is Purena's father Valander Hundley, Widower, born Virginia, both parents born Virginia.

 

Orlando and Parina had the following children:

              14    M         i.    Berta MULLEN was born about 1872 in Kane, Illinois. (Was he Albert or Robert?)

              15    F          ii.    Mabel MULLEN was born Dec 1879 in St. Charles, Kane, Illinois.

 

7.     Joshua HUNDLEY (Valentine) was born about 1842 in Nelson Co., Virginia. He died after 1880 in Geneva, Kane, Illinois.

   In the 1880 census at Geneva, Kane, Illinois, p. 384A, Joshuay Hundley, 35, widower, , Laborer, residing with Edward Lang and family. With him are his children, John E., 7 and George, 3 both born at Illinois.

 

Joshua and his spouse had the following children:

             16    M         i.    John E. HUNDLEY was born 1873.

              17    M        ii.    George HUNDLEY was born 1877 in Sycamore, Illinois. He died 9 Jul 1888 in St. Charles, Kane, Illinois.

 

8.     Mildred HUNDLEY (Valentine) was born about 1844 in Nelson Co., Virginia. She died 20 Oct 1918 in Joliet, Illinois.

Mildred married Willis H. HUNDLEY 8 Nov 1873 at Kane County, Illinois. (Who were his parents? Was he a cousin? Look for him in 1850/1860/1870 census - The Joliet city directory gives that Mildred's husband was Willis H. Hundley. There is a Willis Hundley born circa 1819 at Bracken, KY where Nehemiah b. 1805 is with second wife Martha in 1860 census.) on 8 Nov 1873 in Kane Co., Illinois. W. H. HUNDLEY died before 1880 in Illinois. (Marriage record gives him simply as W. H. Hundley)

   In the 1880 census for St. Charles, Kane, Illinois, p. 459B, Mildred Hunley, 36, widow, born Virginia with parents born Virginia and her daughter Minnie M, 3, born Virginia (not likely since marriage was in Illinois) with father born Virginia, are with the family  of Allen and Annette Warren who were from New York. He is a Milk Peddler. They have a daughter, Edith A. Warren age 9 born Illinois.

 

   In the 1900 census for Joliet, Ward 5, Will, Illinois, Mildred Hundley, mother-in-law, 56, born March 1844, Virginia, 1 child which is still living, with family of Ollie Allison, 32, Nov 1867, born Norway, with wife Minnie, 23, born June 1876 married 7 years with 1 child which is still living, Millard A., 5, born Sep 1894. Ollie is a laborer at a rod mill. Minnie gives both parents born Virginia.

 

 In the 1910 census for Plainfield Twp., Will, Illinois, ED 192, sheet 12B, Ollie Allison, 48, born Norway, ditcher married 17 years to wife, Minnie M., 43, born Illinois, parents born Virginia (this confirms birthplace of father). Her 2 children are with her; Nellie, 6 and Edna L., 11/12. With them is mother-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Hundley,65, widow, born Virginia, parents born Virginia. Ollie immigrated in 1881.

 

W. H. HUNDLEY and Mildred had the following children:

9.     Martha HUNDLEY (Valentine) was born about 1846 in Nelson Co., Virginia. She died after 1880.

Martha married William F. STEWART on 6 May 1868 in Kane, Illinois. He was born at Virginia about 1836 and died after 1880.

    In the 1870 census at Geneva, Kane Co., Illinois, p. 46, Valentine Hundley, 69, Carpenter, (married or Widower?) with children, Lucinda, 27 House Keeping, "Parina", 25, "Madrot", 21, Martha, 21 all born a Virginia and small child, Amelia, 1 born at Illinois.

 

   In the 1880 census for Morris, Grundy, Illinois, p. 341C, William J. Stewart, 37, born Virginia, Carpenter with wife, Martha E., 27, born Illinois, Keeping House. Father born Virginia and mother born Ohio. With them are children, Minnie, 12 born West Virginia, Mary F., 7, born Illinois and George W., 3, born Iowa.

 

   In the 1900 census for

 

William and Martha had the following children:

              19    F           i.    Amelia STEWART was born about 1869 in St. Charles, Kane, Illinois.

Third Generation

12.   Ellen V. HUNDLEY (Nehemiah Staples, Valentine) was born 16 Feb 1860 in Kane Co., Illinois. She died 2 Jan 1935 in Portland, Oregon.

Ellen married (1) John Allen BLISS, son of Benjamin BLISS and Sarah ALLEN, about 1875 in Manchester, Delaware, Iowa. John was born 12 Feb 1853 in Illinois. He died 16 Oct 1897 in Atwood, Rawlins, Arkansas.

   In the 1880 census at Rawlins, Kansas, p. 433A, John A. Bliss, 28, born Iowa, farmer with wife, Ella V., 20 born Illinois with parents born Virginia and dau. Altal E., 3 born Iowa. With them is E. J. Doolittle, 21 born Iowa.

 

John and Ellen had the following children:

              20    F           i.    Alta Leota BLISS was born 17 Sep 1876 in Manchester, Delaware, Iowa. She died 21 Dec 1897 in Mikesell Tp., Rawlins, Kansas.

Alta married Jacob F. HUFFMAN on 25 Mar 1893 in Atwood, Rawlins, Arkansas.

Ellen also married (2) Levi Christopher STARK, son of James STARK and Deborah WRIGHT, on 16 Feb 1889 in Rawlins, Arkansas. Levi was born 30 Nov 1861 in Lineville, Mercer, Missouri. He died 17 May 1916 in Glenn, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.

   In the 1900 census at Rawlins, Kansas, p. L. C. Stark, 38, born Missouri, married 10 years to Ella, born Illinois. One child not living. Ella doesn't know where her parents were born.

 

   In the 1910 census at 7 WD, Portland, Oregon, Part 1, page 245B, is Levi C. Stark, born Missouri in 1860.

 

   In the 1920 census for Portland, Multnomah, Washington, ED   p.   , Ella V. Stark (Index gives her in error as Ella C. Stack), 59, born Illinois, with Father and mother born Virginia. With her is her "half-brother" William W. Chalk, 42, born Illinois (sic) with father born Ireland and mother born Virginia.

 

   In the 1930 census for Long Beach, Pacific, Washington; Roll: 2509; Page:  ; Enumeration District: 15; Image: 90.0. , Ella C. Stark, 60, Widow born Illinois with father born Illinois and mother born Virginia.

 

Levi and Ellen had the following children:

              21    F          ii.    Sara STARK was born before 1900. She died before 1900.

 

13.   George William HUNDLEY (Nehemiah Staples, Valentine) was born 3 Mar 1862 in Kane Co., Illinois. He died after 1888 probably in South Dakota.

George married Christina JACOBSON on 17 Jan 1885 in Beadle, South Dakota. Christina was born 1850 in Sweden. She died after 1890 in South Dakota.

   In the 1880 Milo, Delaware, Iowa, p. 472A, Samuel R. Young, 55, born Maryland, farmer with father born Maryland, mother born Pennsylvania and wife, Sarah, 50 born New York and children, Daniel H., 23 born Iowa his wife, Laura B., 25, born Ohio and George Hundley, 18 born Illinois, parents born Virginia.

 

George and Christina had the following children:

              22    M         i.    Perry William HUNDLEY was born 27 Oct 1885 in Huron, Beadle, South Dakota. He died 4 Dec 1941 in Seattle, Washington.

      In the 1900 census for

 

Perry married (1) Credonia. Credonia was born about 1883 in Ohio.

   In the 1910 census for Redondo Twp., Los Angeles, California, p. 6A, Perry W. Hundley, 24, born South Dakota, father born US, mother born Sweden. He is with wife, Credonia, 27, born Ohio. Married 2 years. Her second marriage. She has one child which is living but not with her. He is a teamster.

 

   In the 1920 census at Seattle, King, Washington, ED 211, p. 4A, Perry W. Hundley, 34 gives that he was born in Illinois and that his father was born Illinois and his mother was born Sweden. He is an iron worker in the shipyard. It appears that he is DV (divorced?)

 

Perry also married (2) Stella. Stella was born about 1885 at Wisconsin.

    In the 1930 census for Miami, Dade, Florida, ED 10, Perry W. Hundley, 44, married at age 20, gives born Kansas, parents birthplace unknown, proprietor of a Soft Singles? store, with wife, Stella M., 44, married at age 20, born Wisconsin, with child Eugene W., 16, born Washington, father born Kansas, mother born Wisconsin.

 

 

              23    M        ii.    Joseph Melvin HUNDLEY was born 18 May 1888 in Huron, Beadle, South Dakota. He died 26 Oct 1965 in San Leandro, Alameda, California.

Joseph married (1) Phoebe Ethel KRUGER in Oakland, California. Phoebe was born about 1887 in Wisconsin.

   In the 1910 census for Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, ED 12B, Joseph M. Hundley, 23, born South Dakota, married 3 years to Ethel P., 24, born Wisconsin, with children, Harold, 2, and Caroline 9/12 born Oregon. Joseph gives father born Minnesota and mother born Sweden. Jospeh is a car builder with the railroad company.

 

   In the 1920 census for

 

Joseph also married (2) Nellie M. LITTLE on 1 Jun 1927 in Stockton Twp., San Joaquin, California.

   In the 1930 census for Volcano, Amador, California, Joseph Huntly, 42, born South Dakota, Mechanic with the Salt Spring Project, Pacific Gas and Electric company. His family not with him. He gives father born Michigan and mother born Sweden.

 

Joseph also married (3) Mabel Ellen MARTYN about 1931.

 

18.   Minnie M. HUNDLEY (Mildred HUNDLEY, Valentine) was born at Will, Illinois Sep 1876 and was living at Joliet, Illinois in 1930. (Need death registration and obituary for her)

Minnie married (1) Ollie ALLISON on 13 Dec 1893 in Will, Illinois. Ollie was born about 1872 in Norway. He died after 1910 in Plainfield Twp., Will, Illinois.

    In the 1900 census for Joliet, Ward 5, Will, Illinois, Mildred Hundley, mother-in-law, 56, born March 1844, Virginia, 1 child which is still living, with family of Ollie Allison, 32, Nov 1867, born Norway, with wife Minnie, 23, born June 1876 married 7 years with 1 child which is still living, Millard A., 5, born Sep 1894. Ollie is a laborer at a rod mill. Minnie gives both parents born Virginia.

   In the 1910 census for Plainfield Twp., Will, Illinois, ED p. , Mrs. Mildred Hundley, 43, born Illinois, married 17 years, 2 children and both still living. She is with son-in-law Allie Allison, 48, born Norway. Children are Nellie E., 6 and Edna L., 11/12 both born Illinois. Allie is "working out."

Minnie married (2) Ben MOORE before 1920 in Will, Illinois. Ben  was born about 1876 in Ohio. He died after 1920 in Plainfield Twp., Will, Illinois.

    In the 1920 census at Will, Illinois, Ben Moore, 44, born Ohio is a laborer at a box factory. With him is wife, Minnie, 43, born Illinois, parents born Virginia and child, Nellie Allison, 15, and Lena, 11 both born Illinois, father born Norway.

 

 In the 1930 census for Joliet, Will, Illinois, ED 22, Minnie Moore, 53, Mother-in-law, born Illinois, with daughter Nellie Scrouggins, 25 married at age 18 to Benj Scrouggins, 25 who married at age 17. They have 3 children, Robert, Donald and John. Also with them is Minnie's daughter Leona Lyshee, 22 with daughter, Dollie, 4 and 2 roomers.
