Introduction

There is no evidence yet that the family of Jacob Whitesell is related to the family of Andrew Whitesell of Sussex County but since both families were located in New Jersey at the same period it would seem prudent to learn as much as possible about Jacob's origins and descendants.


Generation One

1. JACOB1 WEITZEL / WHITESELL died probably at Upper Pennsneck, Salem County, New Jersey before his inventory was taken 14 October 1769. He married ANNA MARIE WENZEL. She married second, 9 November 1779, Martin Katz Catts (mentioned in will of Phebe Waggoner). (See Moravian Records for Pennsneck, Salem County, New Jersey)

The will of Phebe Waggoner, of Upper Penns Neck, Salem County, New Jersey, dated 10 April 1792, mentions grandson, Joseph Nail, 100 acres off lower end of home plantation purchased of Peter Justice. Grandaughters, Catherine and Phebe Nail, remainder of said plantation. Son, Fredrick Whitesell, £120, Grandchildren, Conrod, John, Mary and Catharine Whitesell, each 5 shillings. To Mary Fowler, rents due from Martin Catts. Residue to be divided between, Joseph Nail, Phebe Nail, Catharine Nail and Phebe Whitesell. Executor - Joseph Sharp. Wit. Who was Phoebe Waggoner's first husband?

Jacob Witzel's inventory is dated October 14, 1769. Francis Waggoner was the administrator along with Jacob Kye [sp.] and Adam Clark. Jacob Witzel was of Upper Pensneck in Salem Co. NJ. Jacob died without a will. Mary Whitsel was his wife. An accompanying affidavit signed by Mary with her mark was witnessed by Cathrin Whitsel [by her mark] and Charles Reilly. Jacob's inventory was valued at £27. 18. 5.

There is also an inventory for Jesse Whitesell of Salem Co. dated September 14, 1839. He was from Lower Pensneck and his assets were valued at $749.04.

2. CONRAD2 WHITSEL / WHITESELL died probably at Upper Pennsneck, Salem County, New Jersey after his will was dated 5 January 1838 and before his inventory was taken when?. He married ELIZABETH.

Conrod Whitsel's will is dated January 5, 1838. He was of Upper Pensneck in Salem Co. The will names Elizabeth his wife, a daughter Jamina, Jacob Whitsel, Joseph Whitsel, Benjamin Whitsel, Conrod Whitsel, Matilda and Mary Garrett, David Whitsel and Thomas Whitsel. Elizabrth Whitsel was the sole executor. The value of his inventory was $344.15.
