Wikwemikong Hub Centre





The Wikwemikong Hub Centre is a multupurpose Child Care Centre. The Centre was built in 1989/90 and opened on March 05/90 for operation. The Centre has a Junior Kindergarten program,a Nursery School program, a Day Care program along with a Toy Library Resource Centre with a mobile unit to serve all of the W.U.I.R. membership including the satellite communities of Wikwemikong. The children enrolled are two and a half to four and a half years old and we have about 112 children on a yearly basis with 18 fulltime staff and 3 bus drivers.

Program Statement

The Wikwemikong board of Education was mandated by Chief and Council to manage the educational programs in the spring of 1986. The Wikwemikong Nursery School, which has been in existence since August of 1971 and under the administration of Chief and Council, was also transferred to the Wikwemikong Board of Education in August of 1987.

The Wikwemikong Hub Centre programs are designed to meet the educational aspects of Early Childhood Education as well as addressing the needs of our community in the areas of Child Care Services.The Programs consist of an integrated Nursery School and Day Care program, which can accommodate as many as 120 children ages 2 ½ to 5 years, 40 in full time Day Care, 40 in each the Nursery morning and afternoon programs. A Toy Library Resource Centre is in operation with a mobile unit to better serve the communities’ children between the ages of 0 – 12 years in the outlying areas (Satellite Communities). Areas served on the Wikwemikong Reserve within a distance of  5 – 26 kms are Murray Hill, Cape Smith, Wikwemikongsing,Kaboni, Buzwah, and Rabbit Island.

The program goals and objectives are to provide a  co-operative endeavor by the teachers, workers and parents to assist in the overall optimum development of all the children in the areas of social, emotional, physical, creative, cognitive, and cultural development. The following will be addressed in the daily programming of our childcare components.
 

THAT:  The children are given many opportunities to learn about their culture and language.
THAT:  The children are given many opportunities to learn about their culture and language.
THAT:  The Jr. Kindergarten are given an introduction to the basics of a Kindergarten curriculum in the cognitive programming.
THAT:  The children are encouraged to become independent in areas such as self-help skills, dressing, tying shoelaces, toileting and washing hands.
THAT: A variety of activities and centers are made available so children may choose their own activity to participate in.
THAT:  All different activities and group play help in the development of verbal skills, the native language is also used in daily conversation.
THAT:  They develop their creativity through the art programs provided.
THAT:  They learn to get along with their peers and teachers in-group activities.
THAT:  They develop an appreciation for books and literature through the library programs provided.
THAT:  They are given the opportunity to develop their large and small muscles in our Gross and Fine Motor programming in the daily activities being provided.
THAT:  The Hub Centre be well equipped with props for role playing and imaginative play.
THAT:  The children are encouraged to express themselves freely in both languages.

These goals and objectives can be realized with genuine interest, dedication, teamwork, and a lot of patience, love and understanding. We must realize that Early Childhood Education, in its many facets, can be the basis of a solid foundation for the future education and cultural growth.
