About Us
Welcome to Ray Mackie Paint Horses, Ray and Sheila Mackie.
We are located in the beautiful Kawartha Lakes area of central Ontario, 90 minutes north east of Toronto.
We have lived here since 1987 and have lived within an hour of here all of our life. We didn't grow up on
farms but we both had that deep love of horses as long as we can remember. Ray's Aunt Betty ran a local
riding stable in Oshawa for years and most of his time was spent there when he was young. I was also raised
in Oshawa and I used to ride at that very stable. It wasn't until many years later that we met up with each
other, of course it was through horses that we met. We were married in April of 1973 and horses have been
the main part of our life ever since.
In the fall of 1973 on a visit to a local paint horse breeders farm we spotted a weanling filly that
caught our fancy. We purchased this filly and she became the first of our many futurity winners. This was
the start of our more than 30 years of involvement in the Paint Horse industry. Our second paint horse was
a 1974 tobiano filly we first saw when she was about 30 days old and it was love at first sight for both of
us. That very day when we returned home from the visit we called the owner to see if she was for sale and
bought her right then and there. We showed this filly "Sweetie Reed" to National Champion yearling filly
the next year.
We have owned many paints in our life time but the one who remains favorite in both of our hearts is Tag
A Bear. We purchased him as a yearling and owned him for 13 years. He sired the winners of more than 100
futurity classes and was twice on the leading sires list for us.
Over the years we have shown many horses to numerous awards for their owners and helped to guide many
people in their showing and breeding programs. Halter is our specialty and we take great pride in the
preparation and presentation of these horses.
Ray retired from General Motors in August 2004 and now is able to devote all of his time to the horses.
We have recently had a Cover-All arena erected and now we can work horses regardless of the weather outside.
Hopefully we will be ready for a few of the earlier shows in the spring and we will be able to get the early
foals out more.
If you are looking for a top halter prospect or just want to come and visit drop by anytime. We love
to talk horses and we are usually home if we aren't at a show. Ray occassionally takes one or two outside
horses in to fit and show and we do several futurities later in the season.
Thanks for visiting with us here at our on-line home.
