The Weather is Impressive!

The prevailing winds are from the west, across Lake Huron from the state of Michigan. When large storms are crossing south of us, across the lower Great Lakes, east or north-east winds strike the Georgian Bay shoreline.

A Storm

Ferndale can be rather windy. It is situated in the center of the Bruce Peninsula on a flat terrain of agricultural fields.

On October 5th,1997  I sat just west of the corner of Highway #6 on Bruce Road #9 and videotaped a storm which was very unique. This storm came from the northwest and first made land at the north end of the Peninsula just south of Tobermory doing considerable damage in the Dorcas Bay and Warner Bay area. There was damage from wind and hail across the Peninsula down to the area north of the village of Lion's Head and Isthmus Bay, where the storm exited over Georgian Bay.

From a vantage point just south of the storm I could see its cyclonic shape and inside of it was trapped an interesting cloud formation the shape of a big fat cigar. In a period of three minutes I experienced a 180 degree shift in the wind direction form northerly to southerly. Associated lightening striking over the Bay added to the show.
